South Gloucestershire libraries are celebrating British Science Week (11 to 20 March) with a free, family friendly programme of science events and activities including demonstrations of 3D printing, interactive coding sessions and robot building.

From Friday 11 to Sunday 20 March (during library opening times) Mangotsfield School will be creating a weird science hands-on display to challenge and surprise visitors to Emersons Green Library.

Kingswood Library will be hosting an exhibition from Broadcom, a South Gloucestershire based global technology company from Friday 11 to Sunday 20 March (during library opening times). Broadcom designs semiconductor products which are used in a range of everyday devices such as smartphones, wireless networks or in streaming music or films.

On Saturday 12 March there will be a Science Saturday at Downend Library, with crafts and modelling in the morning (10am to 12pm) and science experiments in the afternoon (2pm to 4pm). For children aged 6+.

There’s an opportunity to see a 3D printer in action and learn what they are capable of at Patchway Library on Tuesday 15 March, from 3pm to 5pm. The session will be provided by staff from South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and local business EMCO Education Ltd.

Science Week is supported by UWE STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) science ambassadors from the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, who will be at Bradley Stoke Library (3pm to 6pm) on Tuesday 15 March to run interactive sessions on coding and building robots. For children aged 6+.

Wednesday 16 March will see an opportunity for young people to explore career opportunities in science and technology. Broadcom engineers will be at Kingswood Library from 2pm to 5pm to talk about the work carried out by their electronics engineers and careers in the industry.

Children’s group Fizz Pop Science will be visiting Yate, Hanham and Bradley Stoke libraries on Saturday 19 March to run science workshops featuring foaming potions and hydrogen balloon explosions. The group will be at Yate Library from 11am to 11.30am, Bradley Stoke Library from 1pm to 1.30pm and Hanham Library from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. For children aged 6 to 11.

Communities Committee Chair Cllr Heather Goddard said: “British Science Week is a 10 day celebration of the best of British science, technology, engineering and maths, and provides the perfect opportunity to inspire our young people for their future careers. The technology sector in South Gloucestershire is a major employer and this area is set to grow rapidly over the next few years. Come along to one of our library events to find out more.”

Staff from South Gloucestershire’s libraries have also created a booklist for people to explore and learn more about science and technology. For more information, to view the booklist, and find out about all of the British Science Week events visit www.southglos.gov.uk/scienceweek
