This year the event takes place in Staple Hill with a parade of veterans, military vehicles, marching bands, air cadets, scouts, the Salvation Army and the Royal British Legion Bikers. They will muster at Kendall Road at 11am and march off at 11.25am. The parade will travel along the High Street to Broad Street and make its way to Page Park where an Armed Forces Covenant will be signed by representatives from South Gloucestershire Council including Leader of the Council John Calway and Deputy Chief Executive Dave Perry will be joined by Air Marshal Simon Bollom, Lieutenant Commander Jonathan Lee and Brigadier Andrew Brown. Throughout the day there will also be performances, stalls and activities available for all the family to enjoy from 10.30am to 4pm in Page Park.

There are around 1,480 serving military personnel living in South Gloucestershire with a civilian armed forces population of more than 7,400.

The covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual support between the civilian population and its local armed forces community which recognises the huge commitment and sacrifice these individuals make.

Cllr John Calway will sign the covenant on behalf of South Gloucestershire Council. He said: “We have been supportive of our armed forces for many years in South Gloucestershire and we take pride in recognising their contribution to community life and I hope people will join us in lining the streets of Staple Hill to pay tribute to their work.

“Armed Forces Day is extra special for South Gloucestershire Council this year because we will be joined in Staple Hill by representatives from the Ministry of Defence to sign a joint Armed Forces Community Covenant which pledges to encourage support for the armed forces past and present who live in our district.”

Air Marshal Bollom, who will sign the military covenant on behalf of the Royal Air Force, said: “The informal backing given by the South Gloucestershire community to the Armed Forces throughout the years has been extremely well received. We live among you; indeed, as part of you, but I know this formal pledge of support from the community means a tremendous amount to the members of the Naval Service, the Army and Royal Air Force and their families, as they conduct their duties both here and in our ongoing operations overseas.”

Cllr Ian Boulton, who will be attending the event as part of his official engagements as Chairman of South Gloucestershire Council, added: “Show your support for our armed forces by coming along and watching the parade and enjoying all the performances we have lined up in Page Park throughout the day. It promises to be a great day out for all the family.”
