Time is running out to nominate your community heroes! The nominations deadline for this year’s Chair’s Community Awards is Friday 9 January.

The annual awards event provides the council with the perfect way to celebrate the hard work and dedication of volunteers in the community who display outstanding commitment in giving up their time and effort to help others.

This year’s celebration of community work and volunteering takes place on Thursday 12 March. Suggestions for nominations include those who have contributed to community development, promoting equality, arts, sports, play, environment, working with older or young people, advice and advocacy or have simply been a good neighbour. From charity fundraisers to local football club managers, sports coaches and arts festival organisers, these awards have seen South Gloucestershire Council honour the dedication and commitment of hundreds of unsung heroes across the district.

Chairman of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Howard Gawler said: “There are just four weeks left to submit your nominations for the Chair’s Community Awards and honour your community hero.

“It is important to recognise the dedication of the many volunteers that give up their own time to bring our communities together and improve the lives of local people. These awards are a great way to celebrate their hard work and commitment.
“I am really looking forward to seeing this year’s nominations and hearing about all the wonderful work going on in South Gloucestershire communities, so please nominate an unsung hero today.”

Last year’s event saw award winners from a wide variety of backgrounds presented with certificates by the previous chair of South Gloucestershire Council, Cllr Ian Boulton, and Principal and Chief Executive of South Gloucestershire & Stroud College, Kevin Hamblin. The Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, also attends the awards ceremony and selects one of the winners to receive a special Lord Lieutenant’s Award.

The deadline for nominations is Friday 9 January and the chosen nominees will be notified week commencing 26 January and invited to a prestigious awards evening on 12 March to receive their awards.
