The roadshows are aimed at anyone who has recently been diagnosed with dementia, their carers or families. The first roadshow in Yate also coincides with Dementia Awareness Week, which runs from May 19 to 25.

Each roadshow will feature a welcome and overview from a South Gloucestershire GP, and include a psychiatrist’s guide to medication and treatment, plus tips and techniques from memory nurses. There will also be presentations focussing on mental capacity, a panel of experts to answer questions and offer practical advice and information. A range of stalls featuring information from local organisations will also be available.

South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, South Gloucestershire Council and partners from the health and voluntary sectors have organised the series of four roadshows to take place throughout the year in South Gloucestershire. Future dates are planned for Thornbury, Patchway and Kingswood.

It is estimated that around 300 new people a year are diagnosed with dementia in South Gloucestershire and there are around 3,000 people living with the condition across the district. (Source: NHS Dementia Partnership).

Denise Swain, Planning and Partnerships Manager at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “These roadshows are intended to provide further information on living with a diagnosis of dementia, let people know about the support that’s available, and inform people about how they can access this support. We also want to reassure people with dementia that they are not on their own in dealing with the illness.”

South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group has recently been awarded funds by the Department of Health to improve information and support to people affected by dementia, and to help support the Patchway and Cribbs Causeway areas of South Gloucestershire to become a dementia friendly community.

So come along to our Living Well with Dementia roadshow on Thursday 23 May from 10.30am to 1pm at the Gateway Revival Church, Station Road, Yate BS37 4PH and find out more.
