Members of the Unison union have voted for a one-day strike in response to changes to council policies on enhancements and allowances paid to staff, to be introduced on 1 October.

The full impact of the action will not be known until Saturday but the council is working to ensure that service disruption to the public is kept to a minimum.

It is likely that the main disruption will be to library services, with the following libraries remaining closed during the day:

– Bradley Stoke Library

– Chipping Sodbury Library

– Emersons Green Library

– Hanham Library

– Kingswood Library

– Patchway Library

– Staple Hill Library

– Winterbourne Library

– Yate Library

Thornbury Library will also be closed due to previously scheduled maintenance works.

Other libraries at Cadbury Heath, Filton and Downend will be open but may also have to close at short notice. Members of the public planning to use these libraries are advised to check for updates on the council’s website at www.southglos.gov.uk/industrialaction or Twitter feed @sgloscouncil

Members of the public have also been notified of closures via signs at public libraries. People who had booked to attend ‘Discover’ festival events at these libraries have also been directly notified.

Separately, the council is also introducing the Living Wage on 1 October, which will ensure that all staff receive an hourly rate significantly above the national minimum wage.
