Following legal changes introduced in the recent Localism Act 2011, the council now has the option to move from the current Leader and Cabinet model of governance to a Committee system. The council will debate and vote on this option.

Under the Leader and Cabinet model, the Council appoints a Leader for a four-year term of office. The Leader then appoints a Cabinet and assigns portfolios to these members.

In contrast, the Committee involves decision-making by groups of Councillors from all parties, sitting as Committees with a Chair elected for each Committee. Council appoints Committees and gives each Committee terms of reference to work within.

If approved, the changes would be implemented from the Council’s Annual Meeting in May 2012.

The Council meeting this month takes place at the Council Chamber, Civic Centre, High Street, Kingswood and begins at 7pm.
