Changes to library services during COVID-19

We are pleased to be able to offer services at 11 libraries in a safe environment.

Filton Library is temporarily closed for essential building work, we apologise for any inconvenience caused. The nearest alternative libraries are in Patchway (BS34 5PE) and Bradley Stoke (BS32 9BS).

  • In line with government regulations face coverings must be worn in the library, unless a person is exempt.
  • Our libraries look and feel quite different as we manage our spaces safely.
  • All of our libraries have hand sanitizer at the entrances and floor markings are in place so people can follow any direction of travel required.
  • These changes have been made to allow social distancing in line with current Government guidance and keep users and staff safe.
  • You must not come to the library if you or anyone you live with have any symptoms of COVID-19 or you have been instructed to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace

What you can do:

  • You will need to have your library card with you to use the self-service machines
  • We will record your use as part of the NHS Test and Trace requirement
  • Please follow social distancing
  • Follow any directional and one-way signs
  • Use the hand sanitizer provided
  • We will be limiting numbers in the library at any one time, please follow staff instruction if asked to wait
  • Please note that standard loan periods, overdue charges and hire fees for DVDs have now been reinstated, check details.

You can use the computers or Wi-Fi when you use the library if there is space or to guarantee use of a computer or hotspot you can book one in advance:

  • Printing is available. Charges will be added to your library account for payment online at librarieswest.org.uk  if you don’t have cash with you
  • Scanner available – please state if you wish to use it if you book in advance
  • You will be allocated a computer and our staff will show you to your computer when you arrive
  • So you can be sure the equipment is clean, you will be given wipes to use before you logon
  • One person per computer (unless you need to bring a child, carer or helper)
  • You will need to have a valid library card and know the PIN
  • Sorry, no toilets available
  • For safety reasons, staff are unable to help you use the computers
  • Minimum age 12 years
  • Please do not drink or eat in the library

  • Order up to 6 items per person to collect at a pre-booked time of your choice
  • Complete a Click and Collect webform for the library you will collect from
  • Select a collection date & time and answer a few questions
  • Or call 01454 865022 Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm, Saturday 9:30am – 12pm to speak to a member of library staff

  • You may return any items you have at home to most libraries through the library letterbox (except Filton Library) or drop box without an appointment
  • All returned items will be quarantined for 72 hours before being handled by staff and will continue to show on your account until then. You will still be able to borrow using the Click and Collect service

There are 3 ways you can renew your loans if you are unable to visit a library in person.

  • Online using the LibrariesWest website. You will need your library card number and PIN to login. If you don’t know your PIN, select ‘Forgot my PIN’ and an email will be sent to the email address we hold for you on our records.
  • Download the free LibrariesWest app from your app store.
  • Call 01454 865022 Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm and Saturday 9:30am – 12pm and speak to a member of staff. Please have your library card number to hand.

Bookstart Baby Bags

Every child aged 0-12 months is eligible for a free Bookstart Baby Bag to help you share stories, rhymes and songs. The content varies, but will include two board books, a rhyme sheet and a booklet of tips and ideas for sharing books with children from a very young age.

Baby Bags are available at these libraries: Bradley Stoke, Cadbury Heath, Downend, Emersons Green, Hanham, Kingswood, Patchway, Staple Hill, Thornbury, Winterbourne and Yate.

You can pick up a Baby Bag by visiting the library or ordering ahead using Click and Collect.

If English is an additional language, or if your baby has been identified as deaf or visually impaired, please contact Bookstart@southglos.gov.uk as we may be able to provide additional relevant free resources.

Newborn Packs

Sharing books with your baby in the first months can help to grow a reader for life. Cuddle up and enjoy your Bookstart Baby Black and White booklet together. The pack contains a congratulations card to celebrate the birth of your child, information about Bookstart and a booklet containing black-and-white images for you to share with your newborn baby.

From November 2020 – Newborn Packs will be available at these libraries: Bradley Stoke, Cadbury Heath, Downend, Emersons Green, Hanham, Kingswood, Patchway, Staple Hill, Thornbury, Winterbourne and Yate.

You can pick up a Newborn Pack by visiting the library or ordering ahead using Click and Collect.

eBooks, eAudiobooks, eComics, digital magazines and newspapers  are available for library members to download anytime.

There are a range of fantastic sites being published to keep you entertained and informed, we are highlighting ones that we think you will find useful for all the family on the LibrariesWest website.  For children why not join in our weekly Lego Challenge on our Facebook page.  Lego Club is taking a break during August, watch out for it’s return in the Autumn with all new themes.

Community Libraries and Chipping Sodbury Library will not open until further notice
