Rural business rate relief

The government has announced changes to the rural rate relief legislation from 1 April 2017. They have increased the mandatory 50% relief award to 100% for all properties meeting the original qualifying criteria.

Prior to 1 April 2017 the policy on Rural Rate Relief was as follows:

Business properties in rural areas may be able to claim a rural rate discount of 50%.

To qualify for this relief, your business must be:

  • the only village general store or post office, as long as it has a rateable value of less than £8,500
  • the only village pub or the only petrol station, as long as it has a rateable value of less than £12,500

If you are a business in a qualifying rural village with a rateable value of less than £16,500 we may decide to top up your relief award by a further discretionary 50% relief, if your business is of benefit to the local community.

To apply please complete the rural relief application form.
