In South Gloucestershire the week leading up the National Libraries Day has highlighted the range of activities people can do in their local library. These include coffee mornings, special storytimes for pre-school children and their families, quizzes and individual IT sessions.

There will be surgeries with local South Gloucestershire Councillors at Emersons Green, Winterbourne, Filton, Kingswood, Patchway and Staple Hill Libraries and bestselling author Lesley Pearce will be talking about her writing at Thornbury Library.

South Gloucestershire Executive Councillor for Communities James Hunt said: “This wide ranging programme of activities highlights the scope of the library service – from finding a good read, the answer to any enquiry, or just the opportunity for a chat in friendly surroundings.

“There were over one million visits to South Gloucestershire libraries last year but we hope National Libraries Day will help make them even more popular.

“Whether you read for pleasure or information, printed books or on your laptop or e-reader, the message this National Libraries Day is use it, join it, love it.”

In addition, for people who are stuck for a book to read, or fancy trying something different, staff in any South Gloucestershire Library will guarantee to find a book or author readers or their families will enjoy.

At Yate library, young members of the Participate Group will be dressing up as book characters and will be on hand on Saturday 4 February to recommend their favourite reads to other young people.

There will also be the opportunity in all libraries for people to discuss what their library means to them.

Plus, the Library Enquiry Centre will be challenging people to ask them “Any questions? We have the answer”. The team of dedicated professionals can be contacted by phone on 01454 866900, text 07919540839, email askthelibrary@southglos.gov.uk or fax 01823 272178.
