Licensing - fireworks, explosives and petroleum

Shops, retail and wholesale outlets storing fireworks need to be licensed to store explosives.

Fireworks

Anybody intending to supply fireworks all year round, other than during the following times must have a licence to sell fireworks in order to do so;

  • on the first day of the Chinese New Year and three days before it
  • the period beginning 15 October and ending on 10 November
  • on the day of Diwali and three days before
  • the period beginning on 26 December and ending on 31 December

You will need to complete an application form and return it accompanied with the appropriate fee. We cannot accept emailed or faxed copies of application forms.

Where adult (categories F2 and F3) fireworks are supplied or exposed for supply in any premises, the Fireworks Regulations 2004 requires a notice to be displayed of a size no less than 420mm by 297mm, with letters no less than 16mm high. This notice needs to printed in A3 and displayed in a prominent position near where the fireworks are sold.

Storage of explosives

A licence to store explosives (including fireworks) is valid for up to five years commencing 1 October each year. To obtain further information on explosives please contact us.

You can download a licence form and return it to us once completed.

Petroleum

Storage certification periods run from 1 January to 31 December and are renewable for between 1 and 10 years. The fee for more than a one year period is a multiple of the one year fee.
