Some of our online payments including garden waste and licensing will be unavailable from 2pm Thursday 28 March until midday Tuesday 2 April due to essential maintenance.

We are running an ambitious project to give every child in the district a library card over the next four years.

We offer every child in reception and Year 6 a library card to encourage their love of reading. A library card opens up a world of children’s books, which can be shared and enjoyed at every age.

We run a variety of activities in all libraries and already work with schools to encourage children to enjoy reading for pleasure.

There are no charges for books returned late, lost or damaged on children’s cards and you can still use your library.

How it works

When you receive a letter from your child’s school, if you do not want your child to get a library card follow the opt out instructions on the letter.

If you do want your child to receive the card no action is needed.

If your child already has a library card either keep hold of it and continue to use it or hand it in when you next visit the library or leisure centre.

Most schools will give your reception child their card during term 6 unless you have opted out.

Most schools will give your Year 6 child their card during term 1 and 2 unless you opt out.

How to use your library card

Visit your library and ask staff for the card’s PIN so you can:

  • use the computers; printing for homework is free but there is a small charge for other printing
  • manage your child’s library account on your mobile phone using the free LibrariesWest app
  • browse our online shelves, reserve the books you want to borrow and we will deliver them to a library of your choice – all for free
  • use the library with your children 7 days a week at unstaffed times by joining our Open Access scheme

Register your card in our Active Lifestyle Centres for swimming or activities, charges may apply.

What your child can do for free in the library

Children can borrow up to 20 books for 3 weeks and take part in fun activities such as Lego Club, Code Club, holiday activities and the Summer Reading Challenge.
