Digital services for library members with free access 24/7 anywhere in the UK with an internet connection

Use your library member number as printed on your card or your digital membership number if you have recently joined online. Otherwise you can join online, membership is free. We recommend that you provide your email address when you join online as this will give you more control of your account, and allow you to reset your PIN easily if you forget it.

  • choose from around 3,000 different magazine titles across a wide range of genres including computers & technology, crafts, current affairs, entertainment, food & cooking, lifestyle, science & nature, sports and home & garden
  • choose from over 2,800 eComics across a range of genres for both adults and children including Marvel, Disney, IDW, Dark Horse & Image, covering fantasy, manga, horror, science fiction and superheroes
  • checkout editions for 21 days. Loans expire automatically after 21 days but if you haven’t finished reading them you can renew for a further 21 days as many times as you like
  • checkout as many editions as you like at any one time – there are no loan limits
  • titles are always available to checkout so you won’t ever need to reserve them

  • go to https://libbyapp.com/ in your browser
  • click on the large circle in the middle of the page at the bottom of the screen
  • click on ‘Add a library’
  • select South Gloucestershire Libraries as your library
  • login using your library card number and PIN

  • if your device isn’t compatible with Libby, this includes Kindle Fire, you can use the OverDrive app www.overdrive.com/apps select ‘OverDrive’ and sign up for an OverDrive account using your library card.

  • if you also use BorrowBox you can find it in the account tab on the app/website.  If you don’t, please reregister online (www.librarieswest.org.uk/join); enter your email address and you will receive an email with a new online membership number you can use straightaway

  • reset it at www.librarieswest.org.uk by selecting “Log in” and then “Forgot my PIN”. This will  send reset instructions to the email address we hold on your record

Troubleshooting access to newspapers:

  • when accessing newspapers, if you see an error message “currently unavailable” please follow the instructions below to reset your Libby account, which should fix the problem
  • remove your library card in Libby, then add it back in again
    • go to > See Library Cards.
    • tap Actions, then Remove Card.
    • tap Add A Card and sign in again.

Changes to our eBook provider

From Monday 16 August our eBook provider changes from cloudLibrary to BorrowBox.  Find out what the changes mean for you.

Research your family history online for free using Ancestry Library Edition. Includes UK census records 1841 – 1911 with images of original records; birth, marriage & death indexes; UK and Ireland parish and probate records from 1500s – 1800s & US and international sources.

Free access to Ancestry Library Edition is usually only available in library buildings. Due to the ongoing situation with Coronavirus, we are currently able to provide 24/7 access to Ancestry Library Edition until 31 December 2021 from home with kind permission from ProQuest and Ancestry:

  • log into the LibrariesWest website – you will need your library membership number and PIN. If you don’t know your PIN, select ‘Forgot my PIN’ and an email with reset instructions will be sent to the email address we hold on your record
  • when you are logged in, click on the link ‘Access to Ancestry Library Edition’ which is at the top of the homepage – it is only visible when you are logged into the LibrariesWest website

  • high quality academic content from a range of disciplines
  • search for articles and read abstracts on Access to Research from any internet connection and email yourself links to articles of interest to follow up inside library buildings
  • visit any South Gloucestershire library and login to a library computer with your library card to access the full text or bring your laptop or tablet and connect via our free Wi-Fi

  • read high quality academic content from a range of subjects including art, architecture, business, engineering, history, languages, politics, philosophy, mathematics and the sciences

Go to Oxford Dictionary of Family Names to find out about your family name, including where it came from.  The dictionary covers English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Cornish and immigrant surnames and includes every surname that currently has more than 100 bearers plus those that had more than 20 bearers in the 1881 census.

To log in from home use the ‘login with your library card’ option to enter your complete library card number.

Our library subscription to Newsbank finished at the end of February 2020 and has not been renewed due to very low usage. For archive newspapers try The British Newspaper Archive from The British Library. It’s free to register, search the archive and save your searches. No bank details are required to register. New users can access 3 free pages in full text.
