Coronavirus (Covid-19): service updates, support and health advice.

Preparing your car

This page provides guidance on how to prepare your car, for a range of incidents such as severe weather or being caught in a traffic jam.

In an emergency you may need to use your car to evacuate your home, or you may be caught up in an emergency whilst on the road. However, it is more likely for you to be stuck in your car during traffic jams on motorways, or stranded in your car due to severe weather. In any case, it makes sense that you keep a small emergency kit in your car for such events.

Consider having the following items in your car:

  • Long life snack bars
  • Drinking Water
  • Torch with spare batteries
  • Pen/Paper
  • Plastic bags and wet wipes
  • Car maintenance and rescue
  • Tow rope
  • Jump leads

In winter consider having extra items such as warm clothing, blankets, a snow shovel, grit and a flask with a hot drink.

We have produced a simple step by step guide on how you can better prepare yourself for these eventualities, see Preparing your car for more information.
