Standing for election

Elections are held for district councillors and town and parish councils every four years. The last elections were held on Thursday 2 May 2019 and the next local elections in South Gloucestershire will take place in 2023.

Sometimes vacancies occur outside of the usual election cycle. These are called by-elections.

People stand for election for many reasons:

  • to represent the local community and help local people
  • to pursue a particular local issue or concern
  • to improve the quality of life in their area
  • to pursue their political beliefs

Democratic local government is all about local people getting involved in the issues affecting their community. You can find out more about the election process and how to stand as a candidate on the Electoral Commission website.

Candidates standing for election

The list of candidates standing for election is published following the deadline for nominations on a notice called a Statement of Persons Nominated.
