Planning for voluntary and community events

Voluntary and community events are an important part of everyday life that strengthen communities and encourage people to play a more active part in society.

We want to make it as easy as possible to plan and hold an event, whether it is to mark a one off occasion such as the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta or the 750th anniversary of the first English Parliament, both of which take place in 2015, celebrate annual events like The Big Lunch, or simply to raise money for charity or bring the community closer together. There is a new “Can do” guide to provide a central resource for people planning a range of community-led events.

The aim of “Can do” is to dispel the myths about what is required and help people to plan and run successful events with a minimum of red tape. Where people are planning a particular event, it also signposts people to relevant specialist advice, such as DCLG’s guidance on organising street parties.
