CHIPPING SODBURY - Town centre - 20 mph speed limit, parking and waiting restrictions

There have been a number of requests to review the speed limit, on-street car parking and the safety of the High Street/Wickwar Road junction in Chipping Sodbury town centre. South Gloucestershire Council have reviewed the existing speed limit, recorded speed data, the existing on-street parking places, waiting restrictions and safety in Chipping Sodbury town centre. The review has shown that a change to the speed limit and a number of changes to the existing regulations and restrictions could help with lower speeds and a better use of the available kerbside, as well as improve access and sight lines for motorists and pedestrians.

Purpose of Scheme

The purpose of the scheme is to improve pedestrian safety, reduce the speed of vehicles travelling through Chipping Sodbury town centre and increase the availability of on-street parking opportunities (at appropriate locations). It also aims to improve vehicle access and sight lines, deter commuter parking, protect resident parking facilities, and improve access to alternative modes of transport.

Proposed Scheme

•  It is proposed to introduce a 20mph speed limit around the centre of Chipping Sodbury. For details please take a look at the Statement of Reasons and the drawing 'Extent of Proposed 20mph Zone'.

•  It is proposed to enhance the existing pedestrian crossing facilities at the junction of High Street and Wickwar Road, High Street and Broad Street to increase the safety of pedestrians and to encourage passing traffic to comply with the proposed speed limit of 20mph. Two options are proposed for this, for details please take a look at the Statement of Reasons and the drawings 'Pedestrian crossing option 1' and 'Pedestrian crossing option 2'.

• It is proposed to implement a traffic calming feature on Hounds Road, in the vicinity of St John’s School, to increase the safety of school children and to encourage passing traffic to comply with the proposed speed limit of 20mph. Three options are proposed for this, for details please take a look at the Statement of Reasons and the drawing 'Hounds Road options'.

• It is proposed to introduce several waiting restrictions around Chipping Sodbury and Station Road. For details please take a look at the Statement of Reasons, the overview Waiting Restrictions Key Plan and the individual waiting restriction sheets listed in the documents section.

Proposed waiting restrictions include:

o   Double yellow lines in several roads around the centre of Chipping Sodbury

o   Single yellow lines in Woodmans Close

o   Limited waiting in Wickwar Road

o   Limited waiting with a permit parking area in Rounceval Street, High Street, Horse Street and The Parade

o   School Keep Clear markings on Hounds Road

o   Loading only bay on Wickwar Road

Residents and businesses who would be eligible to apply for parking permits if a permit area was introduced have been sent a letter and a survey by post.
