Avian Influenza

Avian Influenza Update – 1 November 2022

Defra have announced that from 7 November 2022 housing measures will apply in the Prevention Zone in England.

It will be a legal requirement to house or net all poultry and captive birds. Keepers should start making preparations to bring their birds undercover.

Strict biosecurity measures will continue to apply.

Over the last year, the UK has faced its largest ever outbreak of Avian Influenza. There have been 82 confirmed cases since the start of October 2022, and multiple reports in wild birds. The housing measures have been introduced following an increase in the national risk of bird flu in wild birds to very high.

You can find out the full information and details of the requirements of the prevention zone on GOV.UK’s Avian Influenza pages.
