How to claim Universal Credit

All applications need to be made direct to the Department of Work and Pensions online at www.gov.uk/universal-credit/how-to-claim

If you need help getting online visit one of our libraries during staffed hours for free internet access. They also have volunteers who can assist you in using the internet (by appointment) www.southglos.gov.uk/libraries

Additional support is also available at our One Stop Shops. We can help you apply online, offer budgeting advice and information on any other benefits and services which might be available for you.

Waiting times for Universal Credit are around 6 – 7 weeks from making a claim to getting a first payment. You can apply for advance payments as part of the application process for Universal Credit, however these will need to be repaid out of future payments.

Payments are made to one individual in the household, although there are certain circumstances where payments maybe split. Please see the DWP website for details.
