Sing your cares away

These singing sessions are open to all carers – that’s anyone who provides care or support to a relative, friend or neighbour on a regular basis. By supporting carers and providing some fun and social time with others in similar situations, it is hoped that these sessions will pave the way for an ongoing carers choir in South Gloucestershire.

The singing sessions will offer people a chance to get together and learn some simple songs with fantastic harmonies, and will be led by music teacher and natural voice practitioner Indigo Craig. Indigo runs a series of community singing groups and her workshops encourage people to use their voice, sing and really enjoy the benefits of singing in harmony.

These initial taster sessions will be followed by a regular weekly session at a venue to be confirmed. The weekly sessions will see singers work towards a performance which will take place during Carers Week (10 to 14June).

Sue Jaques, Community Engagement Officer with South Gloucestershire Council, said: “You don’t need to read music, no experience of singing is required and there is no audition – the aim of the workshop is just to have some fun and enjoy singing. There is evidence that singing is beneficial for both physical and mental health, and hopefully these workshops will provide a positive and enjoyable experience for all.”

Taster session dates and venues:

Tuesday 2 April, 11am to 1pm, Council Chamber, Kingswood Civic Centre, High Street, Kingswood, BS15 9TR.

Wednesday 3 April, 1.30pm to 3.30pm, Park Room, The Village Hall, Emerson Way, Emersons Green, BS16 7AP.

Carers wishing to take part are encouraged to book a place by telephoning 01454 868267, or alternatively just turn up at the venue of your choice.
