The event takes place at the Vassall Centre in Fishponds and begins at 12pm with a chance for South Gloucestershire carers to meet with local carer’s representatives and carers from Bristol (who attended a similar event during the morning). There will also be an opportunity to enjoy some songs performed by South Gloucestershire carers choir ‘Sing Your Cares Away’.

Throughout the afternoon carers will receive information about the practical support that is available to help them with their care duties. There will be information on offer about assistive technology for carers (devices and systems that aid independent living or send alerts to carers or family members) and there will be table top discussions regarding recent consultations on the NHS Commitment for Carers and Care Bill eligibility regulations.

Cllr Matthew Riddle, Chairman of South Gloucestershire’s Adults & Housing Committee, said: “The council recognises the enormous contribution that carers make to the lives of South Gloucestershire residents. Events such as these offer an opportunity for carers to access helpful information and advice, to meet other carers and build support networks.”

Dr Peter Bagshaw is a member of South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) which commissions local health services. He commented: “As a GP I know the vital role that carers play in supporting patients. I hope that as many as possible come along to this event to find out what support is available to them, and also to put forward their views on how we can work with them as we plan local health services.”

This year’s Carers Rights Day theme is ‘rights, advice, support’ focussing on making sure carers get the information and advice they need as well as practical solutions on how technology can help them in their role.

The event takes place on Friday 29 November from 12pm to 4pm at the Vassall Centre, Gill Avenue, Fishponds BS16 2QQ
