Cycle and pedestrian routes now better than ever

A growing number of cyclists are now benefiting from the improvements which build upon the network constructed during the Cycling City project – completing missing links and providing more continuous routes between key destinations. The works include new shared paths, crossing facilities, direction signage and lighting.
The LSTF routes connect Parkway Station to Cribbs Causeway, Lockleaze to Parkway Station and Lockleaze to Cribbs Causeway. In addition bespoke direction signing has been used to highlight the Concorde Way cycle route, which extends from Bristol city centre to Cribbs Causeway. For dedicated commuters who cycle or walk all year around the addition of lighting and the installation of 1.5 kilometres of new solar studs will improve visibility along green areas of the route. The studs use solar energy to light up the routes after dark and are located in newly constructed off road sections of path in Forty Acres, Stoke Gifford, Little Stoke Park and Bonnington Walk playing fields, Lockleaze.
Cllr Brian Allinson, Chair of the Planning, Transportation and Strategic Environment Committee, said: “A £900,000 grant from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund has been devoted to these latest improvements. The existing routes now link up residential areas with key travel hubs such as Bristol Parkway Station as well as the major businesses around Filton, Patchway, Stoke Gifford and Bradley Stoke. It is hoped that the improved standard of the routes will encourage more people to think about active alternatives to their regular commute – even if this is only on a seasonal or occasional basis.”
Roy Brewster, a regular cyclist and member of the South Gloucestershire cycle forum, said: “Congratulations to South Gloucestershire Council on their many efforts to improve the welfare of cyclists and pedestrians.
He added: "There is a lot more work is still to be done, but the team have made a commendable start.”
