South Gloucestershire Council leaders have welcomed Government plans to invest in a new M49 junction that will help unlock the economic potential of the Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area.

The new junction – announced today by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin – will provide strategic motorway access to Severnside and give a vital boost to the Enterprise Area, with the potential to create thousands of new jobs for South Gloucestershire and the wider West of England region.

Welcoming the announcement, chair of South Gloucestershire’s Planning, Transportation & Strategic Environment committee Cllr Brian Allinson said: “This is extremely good news for South Gloucestershire and the West of England.

“Severnside has enormous scope for job creation and economic development but it has always needed a motorway junction to help unlock its true potential.

“So I’m delighted with today’s announcement and look forward to seeing the Enterprise Area grow and prosper in the coming years.”
