Comment on council tax reduction proposals

The consultation, which closes on 16 September 2013, features three main options regarding entitlements to council tax reductions in South Gloucestershire. Everyone is welcome to comment, not just those currently receiving the reduction.

What is the local council tax reduction scheme?

In April, council tax benefit was replaced by a local council tax reduction scheme. People who are entitled to council tax reduction pay less council tax. Under council tax benefit the council received a grant from the government to cover the entire cost of entitlements. Under the current council tax reduction scheme there is a shortfall in funding.

For 2013/14 the council adopted a one year scheme that was very similar to council tax benefit and was able to meet the shortfall in funding from other sources.

Why change again?

Failure to make changes to the scheme could lead to an increase of more than 2.5% in council tax for everyone.

The government has said people who are eligible for state pension credit will continue to be assessed under a national scheme and will not be affected by any changes.

Have your say

Comments on the proposals will help inform a decision on which type of scheme will be introduced in South Gloucestershire from April 2014.
