We are pleased to introduce a free service that speech enables our website for those with reading difficulties. It offers a practical website access service to people who find it easier to listen to, rather than read the content of our website.
To use Browsealoud you just need to click on Listen to this site at the top of any of our pages.
The content is read out loud in a high quality, human-sounding voice. Each word is highlighted as it is read aloud and the sentence is highlighted in a contrasting colour.
Browsealoud makes using the Internet easier for people who have low literacy and reading skills, English as a second language, dyslexia and mild visual impairment. It is not designed as a screen reader for the blind or anyone with a severe visual impairment. If you need this technology, there are commercial third party products available, such as JAWS and SuperNova.
As well as reading the page for you it also provides the following functions:
Translate web pages and PDF documents into 74 languages. Speak the translated text where there is a matching voice available; currently 33 of the supported languages. Web owners can choose to have the translator switched on/off or choose to have individual languages switched on/off as desired.
Removes clutter from the user’s screen. This feature presents the current web page in a more user-friendly layout that is free from the secondary information on the page. Once simplified, the text can also be summarised, translated and printed to further help users to digest the information on the page.
Users can customise BrowseAloud Plus to suit individual needs with options to alter the voice speed, highlighting colours and size of text during magnification. Users can also select which functions should be switched on/off by default, such as the hover highlighting, text magnification and the simplifier.
Improved screen mask
The Screen Mask feature is now available on touch screen devices. The Screen Mask will move up/down in response to clicking on the clearly defined large buttons on the right hand of the screen.
Improved PDF reading
User settings applied to reading web pages will transfer to the reading of PDF documents too. This includes altering the voice speed and selecting the colours used to highlight. Translation tool also available with ‘forward’ and ‘back’ navigation ability in the simplified view.
New languages and new voices supported
BrowseAloud Plus now supports 74 languages with the new translation tool, and speaks 33 of those languages out loud using high quality ‘expressive’ voices that will transform online reading experience. The expressive speech gives the voice personality for the most natural and engaging user experience possible. Is there anything wrong with this page?
