Scrap metal dealer

To be a scrap metal dealer, you need to register with your local authority.

What you need to do to get a licence

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 comes into effect from the 1 October 2013.

To comply with the new law you MUST carry out the following action:

Complete the application form

For each director of the company and the yard manager at each site you own must apply for and receive back a basic disclosure of convictions from Disclosure Scotland

Pay a licence fee

The licensing authority will accept a completed application form and basic disclosure with the current licence fee. No Scrap Metal Dealers Licence will be issued to your site/s until a licence fee is paid.

Disclosure Scotland

Each director and/or officer of a company applying or sole trader must accompany their application with a basic disclosure of convictions from Disclosure Scotland; additionally, if you employ a yard manager they must apply for and obtain a basic disclosure. This can be applied for from the following web site, http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk, the licensing authority has been informed that there is a two to three week waiting time for a basic disclosure to be returned so advise you to submit applications as soon as possible to ensure you submit complete applications, incomplete applications will be returned.
