Puffin crossings
Puffin crossings aim to improve safety by using nearside pedestrian signals which encourage users to look in the direction of approaching traffic.
They differ from pelican crossings as they do not have a flashing green man for pedestrians or a flashing amber signal for drivers.
Puffin crossings also have detectors that people are waiting to cross. This is why you must stand by the push button box if the red man signal is showing.
The detectors also 'watch' the crossing and delay the traffic signals so that you have enough time to cross in safety.
