Pedestrians and accessibility

A Toucan crossing
We aim to make it easy to get around our streets on foot, in a wheelchair or on a mobility scooter. As part of our Local Transport Plan, we have developed a strategy to encourage walking. We also introduce a number of new schemes every year to improve accessibility.

What we do to improve accessibility

Our Local Transport Plan capital programme includes a range of schemes to encourage walking and improve accessibility. These include:

  • Controlled crossing facilities - including zebra, puffin and toucan crossings
  • Build-outs to reduce crossing distances
  • Pedestrian refuges
  • Dropped kerbs and tactile paving
  • New footways
  • Widened footways
  • Raised kerbs at bus stops
  • Replacing steps with ramps
  • Removing barriers that prevent use of paths by wheelchair and pushchair users
  • Disabled parking bays

Report a fault

You can report a faultĀ of permanent traffic lights in South Gloucestershire by calling our (Freephone) 24-hour fault reporting service on 0800 854229.

When reporting a fault, useful information such as the road name, nearby junction or notable buildings will assist in identifying the exact location.
