2008 is the National Year of Reading!

National Year of Reading free download week

Free Downloads Week starts on Sunday 3 August, when you can download a FREE audiobook from a host of top publishers, every day of the week from Sunday 3 to Friday 8 August .
Everything starts with reading and audiobooks can help you to fit reading into around your everyday life.

You can listen to an audiobook anywhere – on the way to work, on the bus, exercising or at home. They can help get children enthusiastic about reading. Audiobooks make books more accessible to people who are partially sighted or blind, or to people with learning difficulties.

The free offer starts on Sunday with Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb,
followed by Morse's Greatest Mystery on Monday,
Anthony Horowitz's Stormbreaker on Tuesday,
Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped on Wednesday
and The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes on Thursday.
And as if that is not enough, as a special Friday treat we'll be giving you a range of free comedy downloads including clips from The Mighty Boosh, Flight of the Conchords and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

To  access the free downloads go to Other websites on the right and go to the National Year of Reading website

Whether it’s film scripts or newspapers, sci-fi or song lyrics, we want to get everyone reading more. Take up the challenge, what will you do?

South Gloucestershire Libraries are planning a stimulating programme of activities for all ages throughout the year to get everyone in South Gloucestershire excited about reading and books. Look under the 'More in this topic' on the right hand side of this page for a list of activities.

hy not join the library this month along with your family and friends? 25 and 26 April are National join YOUR library days. Or share your favourite childhood stories with your own children or grandchildren and find out what they enjoy reading? Or perhaps make this the year to read that book you’ve always wanted to but never quite got round to!

Libraries are a great place for finding that next gripping read, but there is also so much more to discover:

  • CDs and DVDs that you can hire for a whole week instead of just overnight
  • Large print and talking books
  • Free access to the internet including online newspapers and ancestry - the essential resource for tracing your family tree
  • Enquire: round-the-clock online access to an information service from library professionals
  • Reading groups
  • Activities for all ages
  • Advice surgeries

So why not join us and discover just how much reading can help you live more.
