What we've done to improve motorcycle safety

A SMIDSY sign
Motorcyclists are more vulnerable than other road users. They are more likely to be killed or seriously injured in accidents – especially if they are young and inexperienced.

Our campaign has attracted media interest, from the national, local and specialist press. Motorcycle New described South Gloucestershire Council as a 'forward thinking council'

We run annual awareness campaigns to help motorcyclists ride more safely and to educate other road users.

Our awareness campaigns have involved

  • Temporary signs at key Smidsy accident hotspots, encouraging drivers to look out for motorcycles
  • Adverts in local cinemas. These slide adverts ran for a year at Longwell Green and Cribbs Causeway cinemas
  • Bus adverts with the words 'Think before you overtake' and tips for motorcyclists to overtake safely
  • Leaflets produced by the Department for Transport highlighting situations where motorcyclists were at risk was distributed to drivers at local garages
  • Free scooter, motorcycle and moped training
  • Bike Safe Day with Avon and Somerset Police. We also donated money to the police to help fund a series of weekend seminars called 'Arrive Alive'
  • Leaflets for young motorcyclists
