Work2Learn programme

Aims of the Work2Learn scheme

The aims of this scheme are:

  • To provide a motivating learning programme, through work-focused activity, for young people identified at risk of disengaging from existing learning provision in Key Stage 4
  • To re-engage any young person who, for a variety of reasons, is not currently participating in any learning provision
  • To reduce the risk of exclusions from school
  • To reduce the number of young people not making effective transition after year 11 into further learning or a job with training
  • To ensure that the young people participating have reached sufficient capability in literacy, numeracy and IT to make an effective transition after year 11
  • To develop the personal and social skills of the young people to benefit from experience of work
  • To trial methods of working to provide individual programmes for learners to increase their employability skills
  • To increase the range of provision locally for individualised programmes of experience of work

Intended target group

The intended target for this programme are young people likely to benefit from the employment focus of this programme. More specifically targeted are:

  • Young people in Year 9 who are already identified as at risk of disengaging from learning
  • Young people who are identified during Year 10 as at risk of disengaging
  • Young people in current Year 10 who are already presenting as at risk of disengaging for year 11
  • Any young person in KS4 not currently participating in learning

Methodology

  • Students will be selected for the scheme by schools liaising with all other agencies concerned and using the mechanism of the existing multi-agency student support groups, where each student is individually assessed for suitability. The school's key worker and the students' PA will then use the 'wheel' diagnostic tool to assess student needs and to identify that the student will benefit most from the 14-16 engagement programme, rather than any other provision

  • As part of the selection, induction evaluation and monitoring, we will be using existing student self-evaluation programmes (where in place) such as 'PLAN-IT' (which all schools have) PASS, and GOAL, currently being piloted in some South Gloucestershire schools. This will support processes to encourage sustainability

  • Where appropriate, schools will provide suitable literacy, numeracy and ICT support. When this is not possible a range of training providers can support Key Skills development from entry level up to level 2
