South Gloucestershire named healthy place to work

07 September 2010

South Gloucestershire Council has achieved the Gold standard Health@WorkAward in recognition of its commitment to helping achieve national recognition for the district as the healthiest place in Britain to work.

The council has achieved the award as a result of the health and wellbeing activities provided for staff, which are above and beyond those required to meet statutory health and safety obligations.

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for communities, said: “It is fantastic news that the council has achieved the Gold standard of this award. A healthy workforce is a productive workforce. It proves that staff at South Gloucestershire are fighting fit and ready to do their best for residents.”

To date, more than 50 local businesses have engaged with the Health@Work award project and actively promote health and wellbeing activities in their workplaces, and 17 local businesses have achieved the Gold standard of the award.

The ‘gold standard’ initiatives available to council staff are encompassed by the Healthy Workplace Charter, and include on-site blood pressure monitoring; healthy eating workshops; lunchtime walking groups; back and eyesight clinics and support to stop smoking.

The comprehensive range of health and wellbeing initiatives available to South Gloucestershire Council staff fully meet the exacting standards required to achieve the award.

In recognition of this, Councillor Heather Goddard will receive a Gold Health@Work Award certificate today, Tuesday 7 September, at the council's Badminton Road offices where a number of healthy activities will be taking place including a lunchtime health walk, staff blood pressure monitoring sessions and a display of the cycling incentives available to staff.
