Careers in environmental health

If you thought that environmental health was just about rat-catching, you couldn't be more wrong!

A career in environmental health is extremely varied, with challenges both personal and professional. It involves anything and everything that affects public health, whether at a local, regional or national level. In practice, on a day-to-day basis this means you would be using specialist skills to develop, co-ordinate and implement public health policies designed to ensure that everyone has the same chance of a better quality of life in a healthier society.

Environmental health officers strengthen public health by:

  • Improving food safety and nutrition
  • Improving housing conditions
  • Improving the environment
  • Improving workplace health and safety

For further information on a career in Environmental Health, go to the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) or the Local Government Careers websites.
