If you have difficulty paying your council tax bill please contact us immediately. We may be able to help by rescheduling your payments. If you are paying by instalments and miss a payment we will issue a reminder. If you do not pay after this reminder has been sent you will lose your right to pay by instalments. This means that you will have to pay the remainder of your bill.
If you still do not pay, we can issue a court summons. You will be charged £75.00 in costs.
Your case will then go to court. If the court decides that you are responsible for paying, they can issue a liability order. This means that we can collect the money by:
- Entering into a repayment arrangement
- Taking money from your wages or benefits
- Asking bailiffs to collect the debt by removing and selling some of your possessions. This means you will have to pay for the cost of the bailiff
- Starting insolvency proceedings through the county court
- Applying to the county court for a charging order on your property. This means that we can get you to repay your council tax out of the proceeds of any future sale
If you still do not pay we will issue another court summons. The court may then decide to order you to pay or to send you to prison.
