Promoting South Gloucestershire’s Geological Heritage
A partnership involving local geological enthusiasts has produced a series of information panels, a booklet and a new web site to promote South Gloucestershire’s most important geological sites (Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites). This material provides a fascinating insight into the area’s geological evolution.
The information panels feature a series of vivid illustrations depicting the landscapes that existed hundreds of millions of years ago when South Gloucestershire was covered by tropical seas, mountains and hot, dry deserts.
The illustrated booklet ‘The Story of Geology and Landscape in South Gloucestershire’ provides a fascinating insight into the area’s geological history. It is available at libraries and Tourist
Information Centres or by downloading it from the web site www.southglos.gov.uk/geology
The new web site www.avonrigs.org.uk provides greater detail on the geology and landscape
of South Gloucestershire and information on the Avon RIGS Group.
The Avon RIGS Group, who work to promote and conserve important geological sites in our area, were key to making the project happen. If you are interested in joining please contact Simon Carpenter on tel. 01373 474086.
