Paying your council bills the easy way

08 February 2010

Residents can now pay for a wide range of council services at post offices and local shops in South Gloucestershire.

It is part of the council’s commitment to giving local businesses a boost while improving access and offering customers greater choice.

The move means that while customers will no longer be able to make payments at the council's three cash offices, they have a much wider – and often more convenient – range of payment options, including:

• The network of post offices and PayZone outlets in local shops
• over the phone, call 0845 245 0682 (24 hours a day)
• online www.southglos.gov.uk
• by post, send your cheques to Council Offices, Castle Street, Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, BS35 1HF and remember to write your customer reference number on the back of the cheque
• direct debit, we can set this up for you over the phone, just call us on 01454 868003

As an example - when parking tickets are now issued, they will include a bar code which allows motorists to go to their local post office and PayZone outlets in local shops to pay it.

Councillor Allan Higgs, executive member for corporate affairs, said:

“We are determined to be a council that supports our local post offices and shops in order to reinforce the important social role that they play across the district.

These plans will provide more places for people to pay their council bills, closer to their communities.”

He added:

“When you consider these plans alongside the pilot reopening of Tytherington post office and our campaign for small business rate relief to be paid automatically, it is clear that we are firmly behind our local traders and the communities that depend on them.”

Alveston post mistress Razia Begum said: “It’s really positive that the council is channelling more business through post offices and some local shops. It is a boost for them and more convenient for many residents.”
