Winterbourne war memorials

Whiteshill Common, Hambrook

Grid reference ST 64524 79314

This war memorial is of pennant stone in the form of a massive, slightly tapered rectangular latin cross with a pierced Iona head on an truncated pyramid-shaped base, raised on three deep and wide roughly hewn steps. The memorial is plain except for the 'line of life' traced on the face of the head. It commemorates both WWI and WWII.

The peace service is held on Remembrance Sunday in St. Michael's Church in Winterbourne. A wreath is laid in the church and then everyone goes to the war memorial for a short service and to lay a second wreath.
