The Health Trainers project for people with learning difficulties is a joint initiative with NHS South Gloucestershire.
Four people with learning difficulties completed a one year training course at the University of the West of England (UWE). They now work three days a week to support other people with learning difficulties to access better healthcare.
Their roles are to:
- work with people who are not going to the doctors but could be healthier
- help people to improve their health
- support people have a health action plan if they want one
- help people find and go to local projects/support groups
- identify what services are missing and tell managers
- provide a link between agencies
