What to do in an emergency

The government has prepared a booklet called 'Preparing for Emergencies - What you need to know'. Every household should have received a copy by post in 2004. If you would like another copy please contact us. Alternatively you can visit the website by clicking on the 'Preparing for emergencies' link in the box 'Other websites' on the right-hand side of this page to download a copy.

What to do in an emergency

It is important to:

  • Ensure that you do not put yourself and other people in danger
  • Call 999 if people are injured or if there is a threat to life
  • Follow the advice of the emergency services
  • Stay calm and think before acting and try to reassure others
  • Check for injuries - remember to help yourself before attempting to help others

If you are not involved in the accident, but are close by or believe you may be in danger, the advice is:

  • Go inside a safe building
  • Stay inside until you are advised to do otherwise
  • Tune in to local radio or TV for more information

Of course, there are always going to be occasions when you should not go in to a building, for example if there is a fire.

Usually the safest thing to do is 'go in, stay in and tune in'.
