Smokefree for businesses

A public house and no smoking sign

England went smokefree on 1st July 2007; by law all enclosed public places and workplaces are smoke-free. Here are some quick facts about the law:

  • It is against the law to smoke anywhere inside your business premises
  • Any existing internal smoking rooms must be closed
  • The regulations apply to external smoking shelters which must not be more than 50% enclosed and may require planning permission
  • Designated 'no-smoking' signs must be displayed at all entrances
  • There are financial penalties and fines (£200 fixed penalty for failure to display a 'no-smoking' sign, £50 for smoking in a smokefree place and up to £2500 for employers who allow staff or customers to smoke in smokefree premises)

South Gloucestershire Council is responsible for enforcing the law in this area.
