Package sewage treatment plants

Package sewage treatment plants are self-contained units for the treatment of sewage, or units which treat effluent from septic tanks to a higher standard.

The following notes are for guidance only. You should consult the Environment Agency for more detailed information.

  • The effluent from a package plant is normally suitable for discharge directly to a watercourse or onto land where septic tank effluent may be unsuitable because of pollution risks. For discharges onto land, see consent requirements
  • Most package plants need electric power to operate and will require regular maintenance and desludging in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions
  • Environment Agency consent will be required for the discharge. See consent requirements
  • The consent will set quality and volume limits for the discharged effluent. Therefore it is essential that you get assurances from the manufacturer/supplier about how reliable the plant is, and how well it performs
