The Charter is a simple, visual reminder of the values and standards that older people can expect from the council and other service providers, including supporting their independence, offering choice regarding their care and helping to ensure they are protected from harm and neglect.
There are almost 41,000 people over the age of 65 in South Gloucestershire, with a further 45,000 aged between 50 and 65. By the year 2025 it is expected that the number of people over 65 will increase to more than 58,000.
One of the council's key priorities is to ensure that older people can live as independently as possible.
Our Older People’s Charter was developed with feedback from older people living in South Gloucestershire. On National Older People’s day last year, over 55s who came into contact with a number of frontline services – including the eight local authority-run care homes, libraries and one stop shops – were able to give their views on it.
A broad range of the council’s partners have also signed up to the Charter.
