Winter driving advice

Advice to keep in mind when driving in winter

  • If your car windows are iced over always ensure that you clear all of the windscreen, side windows including rear passenger windows, rear screen and your exterior driving mirrors. You need to be able to see 360 degrees around your vehicle, if you cannot then you are in potential danger or a danger to others.
  • If frost or ice are forecast, the roads may be dangerous. Cut your speed and leave more room between yourself and the vehicle in front
  • Pavements and footpaths may be untreated, so watch out for pedestrians
  • Cycle paths may be untreated, so watch out for cyclists
  • Always carry a shovel, a snow mat and a torch at night
  • If snow is forecast or has fallen, do not use your car unless you have to. If you are commuting to work, use the train or bus where possible
  • If you do have to go by car, please consider sharing. If there are fewer cars on the roads, it will be easier for everyone to park (some car parks may be out of action during bad weather) and the council's task in clearing the roads will be much easier too
  • If it is snowing, please try not to park on major routes. This is to help snow ploughs
