Council tax benefit - who can claim

You may be entitled to council tax benefit if you:
  • Are working or not
  • Are employed or self-employed
  • Are single or have a partner
  • Are a pensioner
  • Live alone and get a discounted council tax bill
  • Own or rent your home
  • Have not paid any national insurance contributions.

However, you must:

  • Be the person responsible for paying the council tax
  • Occupy the dwelling as your home
  • Be entitled to Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance or have a low income

If you have savings over £16,000, you will not normally be entitled to claim council tax benefit - please see 'Help with rent and/or Council Tax for people of working age' OR 'Help with rent and/or Council Tax for pensioners' for further guidance.
