We are helping older people to ‘be safe, be seen’ in the darker evenings by giving them the chance to get their hands on a high visibility, reusable shopping bag.
The council has launched a bookmark crossword competition across all its libraries and all correctly completed entries will win one of the special bags, which has a reflective strip so it can be seen at night.
Alan Hale, senior road safety officer, said:
“We are hoping that the shopping bag will give older people some protection when they are out in the dark. Unfortunately, older pedestrians are more vulnerable to being knocked down at this time of year. This could be due to the fact they do not normally wear bright, light coloured clothes in the winter. So by making themselves more visible at night or when visibility is restricted it allows drivers to see them when perhaps they cannot readily see or hear them. The bag is a small token towards added visibility.”
Crossword competition bookmarks are available from all libraries across South Gloucestershire.
