It is possible to personalise your ceremony. For example you can include music or readings. It is important to note that, because the ceremony is a civil one, you cannot include any religious content or connection. If you are getting married at the register office these additions must be agreed with the superintendent register at least two weeks before the ceremony. If you are getting married at an approved premises we suggest you make an appointment to discuss your ceremony eight weeks before it.
The ceremony
Two of your guests will need to act as witnesses for your marriage. They should sit at the front of the room so that they can see and hear you make your marriage vows. They will be asked to sign the marriage register to confirm that they have witnessed your marriage (not just your signature).
Before the ceremony the registrar will want to speak to both the bride and groom. If you would prefer not to see one another before the ceremony we can arrange for the registrar to see you separately.
It is traditional, but not necessary, for couples to exchange wedding rings as part of the ceremony. The rings may be placed on a cushion or tray before the start of the ceremony or may be held by a pageboy or best man and presented as part of the ceremony.
Video cameras may be used provided that the superintendent registrar has agreed.
Once your witnesses have signed the register, there will be time for photographs. You will then be presented with your marriage certificate.
Depending on the venue you may or may not be able to use confetti. At the register office at Poole Court, you can only use confetti (preferably biodegradable) outside the building away from the front door. The use of metallic confetti is not allowed.
