Collars, tags and microchipping dogs

Make sure your dog is wearing a collar and tag with your name and address (telephone number is optional, but useful) when it is in a public place. It is a legal requirement, and you could face a fine of up to £5,000 if you fail to do so. It is recommended that you do not put your dog's name on the tag as this can make dog thieves' lives a lot easier.

Although all dogs must wear a collar and ID tag, these can be removed. So we strongly recommend microchipping your dog as extra security. The dog wardens hold regular microchipping events, or you can phone us to find out more.
