The Earth Hums in B Flat by Mari Strachan
I was absolutely enchanted by this book. It's set in Wales and is narrated by Gwenni, an adolescent girl who is trying to understand the way of the world. In her efforts to find the missing neighbour she uncovers secrets and lies and the strange choices that adults make. Her father is an amazing character, full of love, warmth and loyalty. Her mother, on the other hand, is ashamed of her daughter and thinks she is 'odd' and worries about what their friends and neighbours think of her. This is a complex story, with many threads attached, but ultimately one of love, friendship and morality.
