Mobile speed-activated signs have been successful in reducing speeding in South Gloucestershire.
What are they and why are they used?
Mobile speed-activated signs are used to display the speed of approaching traffic.
They are used as a first response to requests for traffic calming measures. They enable traffic engineers to gain a better understanding of traffic conditions prior to introducing any speed-reducing measures.
As a road safety tool, they are used at sites where there is an identified accident problem that can be related to excessive traffic speeds.
How many are there in South Gloucestershire?
As of April 2008, there were 13 mobile signs in South Gloucestershire.
Where are the mobile signs located?
The mobile signs are used on a rotational basis at the following sites:
- Locations with a history of injury accidents
- Outside and around schools
- At sites that have been highlighted by local councillors due to local concern about speeding traffic
The signs are usually put up at each site for about 4 weeks.
How do the signs work?
The signs use radar detection to monitor and record the speed of a vehicle. If it's travelling more than 10% above the speed limit, the sign flashes the speed limit at the driver.
The signs provide a short-term reminder to drivers about the use of appropriate speed.
How successful are they?
A mobile speed-activated sign can have a positive impact on vehicle speeds.
They are effective as a traffic calming measure at sites where traffic speeds give rise to a perceived road safety problem and where there are accidents occurring that can be related to excessive speeds.
