About the music service

The music service provides:
  • Instrumental teaching and curriculum support for schools
  • Performance activities for young musicians at area music centres
  • A source of information and advice for schools and the wider community

Live music visits are offered to schools twice a year. A primary schools' carol service takes place at Clifton Cathedral.

Instrumental teaching is available for junior- and secondary-age pupils. The Music Service has a widely experienced team of over 60 staff offering teaching across a broad range of instruments. Schools receive an entitlement of time, with the option to purchase additional hours.
Curriculum support is offered to all schools and is targeted according to their needs. Support is provided by the learning and teaching consultant.

Area music centres operate on Saturday mornings at Kingswood, Thornbury and Yate. The centres provide opportunities for pupils to participate in a range of performance activities, for which a termly charge is made. Music for Early Years operates at each area music centre for children in reception and years 1 and 2 (including some recorder work).

Other activities during the week include 5 training string groups, 2 Flutissimo groups, Senior Strings, a Jazz Orchestra, Reed Up!(a clarinet/saxophone ensemble) and a new brass ensemble meeting each week during term time.
