What is traffic management?
The Traffic Management Act of 2004 requires us to:
- Prevent and manage congestion
- Keep the traffic moving
- Create and deliver a high-quality and efficient highway network that supports the economy and people of South Gloucestershire
The objective of traffic management is to improve road safety and the flow of traffic. Tackling congestion through traffic management improves the environment and quality of life for everyone in South Gloucestershire.
Our aims
South Gloucestershire Council recognises that people using the road network wish to do so with minimal delays and to be reassured that any incidents will be dealt with efficiently and with maximum consideration for all road users.
In addition, we wish to see the operation of the road network develop to meet future traffic flows by incorporating new technologies and innovation.
How we are going to manage the network
To ensure effective management of the highway network we will:
- Manage all activities on the highway such as roadworks, events and skips etc. to minimise disruption to the travelling public
- Identify locations where traffic congestion occurs and identify measures to reduce or eliminate this congestion wherever possible
- Introduce plans and procedures to deal with unplanned incidents such as accidents, weather-related issues etc. as efficiently as possible
- Improve the way road network information is provided to the public using new technologies
- Introduce strategies in conjunction with the Local Transport Plan to control and manage demand for travel
- To respond to public concerns about the road network quickly and efficiently
- Work with neighbouring authorities to co-ordinate all of these activities and policies
